Blogging for LGBT Families Day 2008

Blogging for LGBT Families Day 2008 inspired me to create this blog. Making the conscious choice to bring children into lesbian family is challenging.  It can be a much more deliberate choice than bringing a child into a family with a more traditional structure.  Many questions arose for us:

Who will carry the child? Easy for us.  I’m much more of a girly girl and always wanted to carry a child.  Decision number one made.

Known or unknown donor? Much more difficult for us. With a sperm bank you get a menu of choices regarding donor characteristics and there aren’t any legal gray areas.  Here’s a great site if you want to use a sperm bank and want some type of known donor – check out Rainbow Flag Health Services: http://www.gayspermbank.com/index1.html.  We were fortunate that a good friend was willing to donate for us (for both of our children).  He was willing to be involved with our children/family without having legal rights or responsibilities for the children.  This has been the best possible decision for us because it was very important to us that our children were able to know their biological father.  We wanted them to be able look him in the eye and ask all of those ‘why’ questions in life.  We’ve been blessed because he has been available but not intrusive.
